Aims and Intensions

'Watch This Space' is a show detailing and exploring progressive ideology and the elimination of negative stereotypes. Although, my show's goal is to break down ideas probably ingrained in the mind-set of older viewers, the target audience for my documentary will be a millennial audience who are interested in starting questions over perhaps controversial topics, thus the audience would probably be aspiring towards a level of high education which will ultimately result in them having some form of influence in society, therefore the socio-economic group that would probably engage with my programme would be B1. Due to the diversity at the heart of my programme it would possibly influence the ethnicity of the audience, introduced by the idea of inscription which suggests an audience tends to view media they find people who look or are classed in a similar way to them.

'Watch This Space' is a lifestyle documentary. The beginning will incorporate lots of quick cuts with an awakening movement from a black screen to the video to mirror the idea of the viewer blinking and suggest ideas of awakening to new, progressive ideas and to build up a level of tension with a continuous diegetic sound even through the blank screens, as a sound bridge that keeps the audience in the movement between the introduction of different people. Up until the turning point of the narrative, at which the girls will begin to answer the narrators questions on their own personal experiences and opinions on these stereotypes, and the documentaries exploration of the true personalities of these women who have most definitely been categorised before. The title sequence is filmed using hand held movement that follows the dynamic positions of the girls to emphasis the documentary feel. I'm only going to be using 4 characters in order to allow their voices to come through clearly and not interfere with each other and confuse the reader, , I think it's really important that they are individualised, thus I will pick and choose which sections and answers to be shown where.

My production will conform to the Channel 5 industry context through its telling of real-life stories, from my institutional analysis and research into the type of factual programmes Channel 5 tend to produce, I can see that the channel leans towards making documentaries which tell British day to day experiences, my programme is doing exactly this. However, the people who are telling these experiences is what is making my programme different from previous Channel 5 productions, the narratives which dictate day to day life encompass my unique selling point, thus answering the editing commissioner’s request for an ‘8pm compelling documentary’.

I will also be converging my film into a double page spread within the format of a lifestyle magazine aimed at a Western generation Z. I will use the title page to place one of my interviewees in an urban setting in a solo mid-shot in order to place focus on the solo whilst at the same time uses an iconographic background to remind the audience of the 21st century dynamic the show has.  Furthermore, in the double page spread I will write a question and answer between an 'Interlude' journalist and director of 'Watch This Space' in order to present an authentic feel that relates to other media based magazines.
