Analysis of TV listings

  • These TV listings have been taken from the radio times website and I am using them to analyse and understand the different types of shows both ITV and Channel 5 show at different times.
  • The screenshots of the 7pm to 11pm slots on both ITV and Channel 5 show a clear pattern of presentation.  Between 7pm and 9pm ITV consistently show their classic soap dramas that have been religiously shown on ITV, such as ‘Coronation Street’ and ‘Emmerdale’, these shows do not feature explicit content however I have noticed when they do incorporate a darker storyline ITV moves them into the 9pm slot in order to reinforce the age rating for that specific episode.
  • Between the earlier periods of 10am to 12pm both channels show a similar sort of programme however neither stick to the religious script similar to that of the 7pm to 9pm listings, perhaps due to a larger audience watching at the later time.  ITV shows a range of talk shows at this time including ‘This Morning’ and ‘Loose Women’ pulling in an older audience who tend to be at home during the day, the female focused ‘Loose Women’ suggests a target audience of women, perhaps the stereotypical housewife. Channel 5 use this early morning slot to show reasonably mundane documentaries such as ‘Can’t pay? We’ll take it away’ and ‘GPs: behind closed doors’. Due to the lack of people watching they probably don’t want to show their most riveting shows at this time.
