What is a lifestyle magazine?
  • A lifestyle magazine is a popular magazine concerned with lifestyle. It includes a number of men's magazines, women's magazines and magazines about health and fitness, tourism, leisure, fashion, decorating, or culture.
What am I going to produce?

  • I am going to use a magazine 'Grazia' magazine as my magazine platform to converge my film, 'Watch This Space' onto a journalistic level. I have chosen the weekly women's magazine  'Grazia' because I am interested in the magazines stylistic approach to current issues which specifically effect women. 'Grazia' produces many articles on fashion and how to maintain a specific lifestyle, however in every addition the magazine devotes 10 articles to their hand picked current affairs, ranging from a first person account of the near fatal experiences of mass migration to the body dysmorphic disorder that is woven into teenage Western society. Often, these stories are relative to the magazine's target audience, women, and thus I think the magazine would offer as a perfect platform to produce my double page spread and cover.
  • I am hoping to produce a double page spread which combines an intriguing summary of the problem at hand, including a strong opinion reinforced by an interview with the director, who details why they produced the film. 'Grazia' articles often tackle quite tough to read topics with hard opinions, and I think I will be confident in replicating this as I will be writing about a topic I'm passionate about. I am going to try to stray away from quick fire questions, as I've noticed mainly low budget magazines do this, instead I will integrate larger paragraphs of speech to offer a more high end feel. I will use the individual narratives of the women as my unique selling point through clear separation of their voices and a quick summary of their experiences.
  • My magazine is going to feature 1 or 2 of the 4 narratives presented in the video, but the text will not be interview based but instead their take on why the programme should be watched and the message it communicates, as well as detailing their knowledge on the subject at hand. Photography will encompass close ups of all interviewees on the double page spread, but the front cover will feature one interviewee in order to communicate the message of the importance of the self and solo speech. I am hoping to use the programme 'Blurb' to structure my magazine and design the front cover and double page spread accordingly. In the text I will expand on the problem specifically over the idea of the light skin, dark skin division within the ethnic female community, in order to convince the reader to watch the informative documentary.

Although, my show's goal is to break down ideas probably ingrained in the mind-set of older viewers, the target audience for my documentary will be a millennial audience who are interested in starting questions over perhaps controversial topics, thus the audience would probably be aspiring towards a level of high education which will ultimately result in them having some form of influence in society, therefore the socio-economic group that would probably engage with my programme would be B1. This article has about 600 words and my double page spread will feature less text and be more focused on image, as after looking at example articles of Grazia I can tell they do appreciate and incorporate lots of related images in order to communicate their desired message clearly.

Aims and Intensions

Aims and intensions I am aiming to produce a documentary which fulfils the requirements and asks of the WJEC spectrum. I want my documentary to feel fresh and new from the very beginning in order to communicate a clear message poised on individuality and uniqueness. I am interested in producing a documentary about what it means to be a women and a minority in 21st century Britain, thus I think I will need to incorporate new methods of filming instead of old documentary style to ensure the message of diversity and appreciation of oneself is communicated clearly.  I am also hoping to bring a new tone to documentaries on Channel 5. Generally, Channel 5 produces quite mundane documentaries such a 'Big Week at the Zoo', that in my opinion are actually quite boring, and I can see why Claire Westacott, the commissioning director for factual pieces, is after something that instantly captures a viewers attention and explores ideas that reach out of day to day living.
